Overcome Evil with Good

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21

This statement encourages believers to resist the temptation to respond to evil with evil, but rather to respond with good. The idea is that by doing good in the face of evil, believers can ultimately overcome evil.

In the preceding verses, the author of Romans urges Christians to love sincerely, to hate what is evil, to cling to what is good, and to show hospitality to strangers. The verse in question, then, is a continuation of this theme of promoting goodness and rejecting evil. By overcoming evil with good, Christians are demonstrating the transformative power of love and acting as agents of positive change in the world.

Overall, Romans 12:21 is a call to action for Christians to resist the destructive forces of evil and instead promote goodness and love in all aspects of their lives.
